The Parish of Rio Tinto, which integrates the City of Rio Tinto, is part of the municipality of Gondomar and occupies an area of 9.5 km2. It is located to the east of the city of Porto, bordering the parish of Campanhã, along the road of the Circumvalation between Pêgo Negro and the Crossing of Areosa. The remaining confrontations are with Pedrouços and Águas Santas (municipality of Maia) respectively to the west and north, Baguim do Monte and Fânzeres (municipality of Gondomar) to the east / south and Campanhã (municipality of Porto) to the south.

Rio Tinto inherited the name of the brook that crosses the parish, roughly in the middle, in an approximate North-South orientation. It is born in Ermesinde, very close to the northern limit of the parish and is the main, and almost unique, water line that exists in the locality.

For centuries, the river provided the population with water and fish. The washerwomen made a living in their waters, the mills proliferated on the banks, whose millers disputed with the farmers the water from the water.

... of Prehistory...

In the so-called Neolithic period, which corresponds to a sedentary phase, there are many testimonies of human occupation in the North of Portugal. Very close to Rio Tinto, there are monuments of this period, especially the great Citânia de Sanfins.
The existence of conditions favorable to human fixation (fertile soils, abundance of water, proximity to a large river - the Douro and its mouth), will certainly have been a strong reason for attraction of populations and exchange with other peoples.

... to the present day.

It is also in this area of the northwest peninsular, where there were gold deposits, namely in the Serra de Valongo, that the art of goldsmithing, emblematic art of the municipality of Gondomar, is being developed. In Rio Tinto, at the end of the 20th century, there were 50 workers distributed in six workshops.

On December 10, 1867, through a decree, the municipality of Rio Tinto was created. It included seven civil parishes: Águas Santas, Covêlo, Gondomar, S. Pedro da Cova, Rio Tinto, Valbom and Valongo.

The Chamber of Gondomar also began the process of electing the chamber of Rio Tinto, to proceed with the transfer of powers. However, by decree of January 14, 1868, the law of June 26, 1867, which had enabled the creation of the municipality of Rio Tinto, was annulled, reestablishing the previous Administrative Code. As often happens, the sadness of some was a cause for joy for others.

Rio Tinto has been a city since 1995, eleven years after being elevated to the village.
