Santarém is a portuguese city, capital of the district of Santarém, located in the former province of Ribatejo and in the statistical region of Alentejo, with 30 021 inhabitants in its urban perimeter (2021).

It is the headquarters of the municipality of Santarém with 552.54 km² of area and 58 671 inhabitants (2021), subdivided into 18 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of Porto de Mós, Alcanena and Torres Novas, to the east by Golegã and Chamusca, to the southeast by Alpiarça and Almeirim, to the south by Cartaxo, to the southwest by Azambuja and to the west by Rio Maior.

Santarém is part of the statistical region of Alentejo and in the statistical sub-region of Lezíria do Tejo; however, it remains part of the Lisbon and Tagus Regional Coordination and Development Commission, which maintained the designation of the former NUTS II of the same name. It also belonged to the former province of Ribatejo (of which it was the capital and urban center most important), today but without any political-administrative significance, but constant in the discourses of self and hetero-identification.

The inhabitants of Santarém are called 'Escalabitanos' or 'Santarenos'.

Despite being called the 'Capital of the Gothic', the city of Santarém is today a city with only a glimpse of all the architectural heritage it has ever owned. Almeida Garrett, in his novel 'Travel in My Land', already referred to the decay and incuria to which many of the illustrious buildings of the city were voted.
